Every year in Serbia 20,000 patients die from cancer.
According to available data, 33,4% die in hospitals, while for the others, there are no relevant statistics. These "hidden patients" are one of society's burning issues. Very few of them have access to specialist palliative care. In Belgrade and the rest of Serbia, there is still not one specialist inpatient hospice that provides multi-disciplinary palliative care to terminally ill cancer patients and their families.
"Hidden patients" - the real facts
30000
new cancer patients in Serbia each year
16000
patients and their families need palliative care
5209
patients die of cancer in Belgrade each year
It is our vision
that everyone in Serbia facing the advanced stages of cancer should have free of charge access to specialized palliative care services. In November 2015 BELhospice started a capital campaign for establishing the first inpatient hospice in Serbia. The new hospice will provide the following palliative care services free of charge:
12
beds in the inpatient unit
500
admissions to the inpatient unit per year
1000
patients to be cared for per year
2000
visits in the day centre per year
2500
home care visits per year
600
outpatient consultations per year
Additionally, the new hospice will offer palliative care education for specialists
(doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists and volunteers).
